My RSS reader is chock full of food (and drink) blogs, and I add new ones every week. I love that there are so many people across London, the UK and the rest of the world sharing their experiences cooking and eating great food.
It’s my pleasure to share ten UK blog posts which have caught my eye over the last few week.
In London, at least, the 2010s is set to be the decade of the burger. The rise and rise of really great burgers, whether they’re sold in burger vans, pubs or restaurants, can only be a good thing to those of us who have a soft spot for juicy meat, pickled gherkins and melted cheese in a bap. Hannah of Crump Eats makes me salivate with her home-cooked version of the Hawksmoor burger, carefully following the recipe from the popular Hawksmoor At Home cookery book.
I love the mix of Ailbhe’s hand-drawn illustrations with her luscious photographs; her Simply Splendiferous blog is one of the most attractive on the web. In her latest post she shares a recipe for spicy slow braised goat that I reckon is a fantastic winter warmer.
Having grown up with Chinese Malaysian friends, we often celebrated Chinese New Year with them, feasting from a fragrant steamboat with a vast array of tidbits to cook within its broth. In this informative post, Pei shares the story and recipe for his mum’s Nian Gao (new year cake). Those interested in learning more about tea will also enjoy browsing the Teanamu archives.
The most touching post I’ve read recently is Matthew Fort’s blog eulogy to his mother, who passed away just a few weeks ago. Taking us through her culinary life and achievements, dish by dish, recipe by recipe, is an affectionate and moving way to say goodbye. Her critical pronouncements, such as her antipathy to eating pork pies and pickles in the evening, bring a smile to my face.
I shall declare my bias upfront, by telling you that Pete Drinks is written by my husband. What started off as a series of guest posts on Kavey Eats has turned into a blog of its own. Regular whisky and beer reviews are now supplemented by Pete’s reports on his own home-brewing adventure.
Pretty much every post on The Little Loaf makes me salivate! But it’s Kate’s delicious ice cream creations that always impress me the most. I’m considering camping on her doorstep to beg her to make me some honeyed peanut ice cream with peanut butter cups!
In her post on humble French classic, pissaladière, Elly from Nutmegs Seven pulls us into a fascinating discussion about food-related metaphors with a look at how we use the word vanilla in everyday language, and whether onion would be a more accurate alternative. Ponder the question, then check out the delicious recipe!
If you got a little bored of the haggis, neeps and tatties posts that proliferated around Burns’ night, let me draw your attention to something a little different, in the form of North South Food’s clever recipe for haggis stuffed onions. The end result looks delicious and I’m thinking of adapting it to use black pudding, sausage meat stuffing and even leftover Bolognese.
The Skint Foodie Kitchen has garnered a lot of well deserved attention since it launched, only a few short weeks ago. It’s already a wealth of information and advice for foodies on a tight budget, and promises to become an even better resource with each new post. Here, the skint foodie shares his recipe for home-made fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce.
I’m very aware that I don’t use my slow cooker nearly enough; it’s pulled out for making stock after a roast chicken dinner and sometimes I poach an entire chicken in water and white wine, that’s about it. So I was happy to see Denise’s post on Simply Veggie, sharing instructions on how to make a large batch of caramelised onions in the slow cooker.
And that’s it, my ten is up! With so much great content to be found on British food blogs, it was a struggle to narrow my choice of posts to share with you this week. Really, I don’t have space to tell you about Food Stories’s praline bacon, Big Spud’s sproutotto, London Bakes’ madeira cake and Warm Snug Fat’s bay roasted hasselback potatoes, but oooh, look, I’ve squeezed them in!
